Music and marketing

Well at this show I did the other day I started talking about something that I believe in very much: Marketing people are not using the full potential of music (on average).

What do I mean by that?
Think about music, what is music to you? Well to me it is something that makes me feel. It will get me to push a little harder when hitting the slopes on skis or lifting weights in the gym. It will make me feel better if I need encouragement and it might provide relief in grief or in break-ups. In short: music makes me feel. Hearing a song that I love or hate on the radio instantly provokes a reaction. Isn't that what you want to do in you marketing? Find ways to become memorable.

A couple of friends of mine who work with video and graphics astonish me by thinking in pictures. They get a feeling and describe it in a colour, I say a word and they see it as a shape. I on the other hand hear things. I get a feeling and hear a chord, I hear a word and want to play it, we are all wired differently. Marketing has been about the people who see things in colour and shapes. But for me, with the new technology and with the way people are getting increasingly good at sorting out visual impressions sound is a way in. Imagine yourself on the bus or on the subway, someone's phone rings. That ringtone triggers a response, it will make you feel something before you have a chance to filter it because it catches you off guard. Imagine now if that ringtone was also the signature of a company, and that company and ringtone matched in moods and in feeling. The best known example of this is the Saab commercial in Sweden, Oh Laura lent their song Release Me to it, and the match between the song, the commercial and the brand was just magic. It was like watching a movie with a brilliant soundtrack. Every emotion was just captured, you heard the lyric, you felt something. In this case the song turned into a hit, and every time you heard it on the radio or in the club you also thought about the company.

These are not new concepts. But there is however a possibility to use these concepts in a way that is much more aware than most companies are doing. It is not easy to find good partners, most musicmakers are artists (just like most art directors) with the difference that the infrastructure graphical designers have around them to get them to function as a company is not in place yet for musicians. There are however some of us that have a strategic understanding as well as a musical understanding. Some of us who believe in music as something that creates emotion, something people are not able to filter out the way the are with visual content.

Sound is very powerful. It triggers emotion. Companies could leverage in their communication by thinking through their profile on all levels, that includes music.

Great show at Marknadsföreningen yesterday.

I had so much fun! but sadly I was very tired from the flight and from my knee hurting afterwards so I didn't have the energy to go out and mingle. I figured I'll post some more stuff on my concept that I talked about on stage yesterday about marketing and sound especially. It is indeed very interesting! I'll have it up later tonight

Tills dess så finns min kontakt info nere om man klickar på den lilla "Contact" knappen. Jag hör av mig. Tack igen för en fantastisk kväll igår.

a little update...

Hey guys. Hope the new year is treating all of you well. I'm super pumped to go home and do that show tomorrow... it's gonna be alot of fun for sure.

I've spent the last month in Golden, British Columbia in Canada and tomorow it is finally time to go home. I'm writing finally not because I had a bad time, it was great but I also managed to crash fairly har the other week and have not been skiing at all for the last 4 days. I apparently stretched something in my knee which makes it impossible to extend fully. Hopefully they will be able to help me out on the airport tomorrow.

The last month has been a lot of skiing but also reeding up on a bunch of stuff, plastics for one but also (which is very interesting) how control (management control) depends on national culture. That is what I'm gonna get into when I get back home. That's what my thesis will be about, how management control systems are adopted to fit different cultures and differen institutional environments. And I've gotten loads of inspiration here lately and there is some good stuff coming out of my head now. I'm hoping to get that into some sort of demoes some weekend in a not too far away future.

What else about Golden, it is a small pretty shitty town but the mountains are amazing and for me this has been a great trip just to have some time to journy into myself also. And I'm also alittle proud of myself, coming home bruised just shows that I've really given the riding my all. In other words I'm learning how to just let go and go with it, for better and for worse. Well as I've said I've been some way from civilisation lately and have done alot of thinking. I'm hitting you with more of what I mean by this last paragraph later this week. promis.

The show that I was talking about is gonna be fun. My keyboardplayer Elias and I will do it at one of the larger theatres in sweden and there will be only hotshots in the audience. I'm gonna talk about what music is to a trademark which should be fun, and pretty easy to illustrate too...

wish me luck on my flight. Take care

Merry christmas

Hey!
I know I've been gone. I have however not been idle. Things are happnening and I'm very happy to be in the centre of things. The concrete stuff that I know of now is a new release in Hungary. My elysium will be seen in TV sets near you there. And also on the 20th of january I'm gonna perform for a huge marketing association on their 90th anniversary. That should be great. Me and Elias doing a one off exclusive thing for them.

Anywyas Merry christmas and happy new years. I'm heading over to Canada for skiing (which I'm super excited about) but I will form now on keep you updated.

I can't wait for you guys to hear the new stuff I'm writing on. It is absolutely great (in my opinion) I wasn't planning on mentioning it but I could not help myself. There is a little bit of a wait but it is gonna be earth shattering, seriously.

love you
